Ticking Bomb free essay sample
Terrorism is claimed to pose such an extreme threat that the prohibition against torture cannot be maintained, we are involved in a new kind of war in which the ordinary moral constraints cannot apply Read the ticking bomb scenario ââ¬Å"Suppose a fanatic, perfectly willing to die rather than collaborate in the thwarting of his own scheme, has set a hidden nuclear device to explode in the heart of Paris. There is no time to evacuate the innocent people or even the moveable art treasures- the only hope of preventing tragedy is to torture the perpetrator, find the device and deactivate itâ⬠However this scenario does not explain how the suspect was caught or identified or whether he has the relevant information and the only way to find where the bomb is is by interrogating the suspect. -Utilitarian justification: sacrifice one to save all the innocent people Although many ordinary people have the capacity to commit horrendous acts of torture without any training Stanley Milgramââ¬â¢s obedience to authority experiment What kind of training would a torturer require? -torturer must be an expert in interrogational torture -requires finesse skill and discipline: -incompetence of guards at abu Gharaib: allowing amateurs to torture prisoners the good interrogational torturer needs to be entirely in control of the process of torture, no flinching, without hesitation but cannot be sadistic or overly brutal. Supporters of the ticking time bomb argument 1. torturer might need the kind of training that is described if he is to be successful . training has not been fully discussed and is harsh 3. because torturers are trained to obey orders they are unlikely to question whether a order is justified, the use of torture is most often what is called a ââ¬Å"crime of obedienceâ⬠- a crime that occurs when individuals perform acts of severe violence, simply because they were ordered by an authority torturers are obeying illegal and immoral orders to torture because that is what they are trained to do, therefore torturing is seen as a professional job 4) its just the way torturers are used is problematic: torture is not accident, itââ¬â¢s directly connected to how they are trained -no evidence that the use of torture will ever be restricted to the ticking time bomb scenario -the interrogational torture needed for the ticking time bomb scenario cannot be achieved without a trained torturer Finally, the way torturers are trained is connected to the illegal and immoral use of torture on a vast scale -cause more suffering than it prevents -impossible to contain the use of torture and the use of torturers within the limits of the ticking bomb scenario

Visual Essentialism and the Object of Visual Culture
No other topic has recently attracted the worldââ¬â¢s attention like Visual Culture and this is due to the force at which visuals or pictures are getting into the market (Bryson 2003).Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on Visual Essentialism and the Object of Visual Culture specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Scholars have staged heated debates on whether visual culture should be an independent discipline in humanities or not. This paper provides a summary of Balââ¬â¢s article `Visual Essentialism and the Object of Visual Cultureââ¬â¢ and subsequently a critique on the chapter ââ¬Å"visual cultureâ⬠. The paper concludes that time has come for visual culture to be accorded independence and be handled in lecture halls as a discipline. The analysis focuses on the authorââ¬â¢s failure to take sides hence giving other scholars to come in and discuss the topic in discussion. It is the views of thes e other scholars that are used to support the paperââ¬â¢s thesis that visual culture should be a discipline. The article kicks off by the author introducing the reader to her thought on the subject of visual culture as a discipline. The article goes on to argue that classifying visual culture as a distinct discipline is like to mix up religion with theology whereby religion is the ââ¬Ëfieldââ¬â¢ while theology is its ââ¬Ëdogmatic intellectual circumscriptionââ¬â¢(p.2) The article continues to extract that it will be difficult to try to study visual culture using the methodology of an existing discipline because its object can not be studied under the paradigms of any other existing discipline. Before scholars undertook to investigating the fate of the discipline, Bal proposes that visual culture largely require drawing from alternative disciplines that have established themselves well into the field of academics for example; anthropology, psychology and sociology. She continued to argue that there could be compliance that visual culture is a discipline by the fact that it claims a specific object and raises questions about it. Bal concludes her introduction by proposing that visual culture studies be initially treated as a ââ¬Ëmovementââ¬â¢ that can fail to propel and harm no one or succeed at its own advantage or failure. The article presents visual culture studies as a ââ¬Ëpolemicalââ¬â¢ issue if taken at face value (p.3) In the part ââ¬ËThe Impact of Visuality against Objectsââ¬â¢ the article discovers that Culture, like visuality faces the difficulty of definition. Here the author argues that understanding culture depends on the way the word culture is used.Advertising Looking for critical writing on cultural studies? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More This is because the word culture, like many other linguistic terms, derives its meaning from the context of use and this makes it hard to grasp its objective meaning at a particular time. In the part ââ¬ËThe Death of Cultureââ¬â¢ the article emphasizes that culture also is tied by ââ¬Ëvisualityââ¬â¢s many tentaclesââ¬â¢ (p. 17). The author therefore declares culture as a dead thing as she puts; ââ¬Å"in making the ââ¬Ësingular universalââ¬â¢ and making the ââ¬Ëplural homogenousââ¬â¢, culture loses its existenceâ⬠(p. 18). In the part ââ¬ËVisual Cultureââ¬â¢ the article is for the idea that a fate awaits culture because no scholar has ever defined it completely including Raymond Williams (1976). It is clearly stated that the word culture can be useful and misleading at the same time. This part centers its argument in the fact that the problem with the object is its attempt to explain what culture is. The author goes on to argue that visual culture is driven by aim of focusing on questions. The next part is duped ââ¬ËThe Objectives of Visual Culture Studiesâ⠬⢠which analyses the aims and goal of visual culture studies. First, the part highlights that visual culture can be understood better when it is separated from art history and its methods of analysis. In this regard Hobsbawn (1990) prescribes that, Visual culture must start by exploring and explaining the link between itself and naturalism as seen in museum, schools, histories and discourses of imperialism and racism. The last part of the article, ââ¬ËThe Question of Methodââ¬â¢ sums it up that the goal of visual culture studies must be derived from ââ¬Ëits objectââ¬â¢ and the methods that suits performing the tasks must be clearly drawn. The author in this concluding part argues that methods must be separated from the objects and the goals. From the article, it is clear that, Bal attempted to foretell the possible future of visual culture as an area of study, but she did not come out clearly whether visual culture should be a discipline but preferred leaving it open for other scholars to discuss. At this point let us look keenly on the chapter headed ââ¬ËVisual Cultureââ¬â¢ where my argument, like the views of many others, is that visual culture studies ought to be launched as a distinct discipline. Firstly visual culture has had an abrupt surge into the discourses of humanity and requires investigation. There is need therefore to reflect on what factors might enhance it or otherwise block it from becoming (Bryson 2003). The chapter ââ¬Ëvisual cultureââ¬â¢ starts with an authoritative prescription that goals and methods of visual culture studies must ââ¬Å"seriously engage both terms in their negativity that is: ââ¬Ëvisualââ¬â¢ as impure, discursive and pragmatic while ââ¬Ëcultureââ¬â¢ as shifting, differential located between ââ¬Ëzones of cultureââ¬â¢ and performed in practices of power and resistanceâ⬠(p. 19). Therefore it is clear from the authorââ¬â¢s argument that the terms visual and culture must be analyzed separately before they are integrated into a discipline of study.Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on Visual Essentialism and the Object of Visual Culture specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The chapter continues to enlist that the differentiation between the high and mass culture should be subjected to test and finally dismissed as merely political. However the author is quick to warn that this abandoning could lead to losing a fundamental tool of analysis. It goes on to defend that this differentiation is what should be the primary object of visual culture studies (p.19). Further the author provides an insight that cultural studies have been responsible for opening up the disciplinary structure of the humanities. It has however, as an interdiscipline, suffered difficulties with all of its enquiries and as a result it always defies the boundaries of humanities leading to the heated intellectual de bate about its position. There is however one major drawback of visual culture that the author identifies in this chapter; that its object (what you study) has changed but the method (how you do the study) has remained static (p.20). This lack of methodology is the only limitation that visual culture has to contend with because it completely denies it persuasive analysis. However visual culture today has an uncontrollable upsurge and if we put bottlenecks before it development, we may end up losing in the game. Presently, the field has become too common through new technologies like print media, electronic media among others. Images are not only socially unavoidable but are also part and parcel of economic mainstreams (Hobsbawn 1990). Today, without pictures (visual), whether canonical or your own, you are like one without sight. It is difficult to imagine a magazine without illustrations, books without images for that would portend life without meaning-an innocent life, blind life. There is a great proliferation of images elsewhere, everywhere and images are no longer escapable in life where all media be it electronic ( television, cinema, internet et cetera) or print ( newspapers, magazines and books) all pump images into the social stage (Bryson 2003) oblivious of the where about of the targeted clientele. And the article reinforces this clearly thus, ââ¬Å"because seeing is an act of interpreting, interpretation can influence ways of seeing, hence, of imagining possibilities of changeâ⬠(p. 21); visual culture has few steps to becoming an independent discipline.Advertising Looking for critical writing on cultural studies? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More It is in this understanding that the paper analyses that pictures today are all over and people earn money from the technologies involved, for example in movie industry with even futuristic animated technology like that of blockbusters as avatar all over the world. Magazines cannot sell without the relevant images; commercial models are used to advertise for goods and services in commerce. Visuals therefore have not only become relevant in museums but have had huge influence in all scores of life, political, social economic, aesthetics et cetera. Therefore my view is that, when a phenomena overwhelms the social control with such impunity as visual culture, the best action is to investigate how, why, where, and what next. In this sense the author is right to advise that visual culture should be investigated thoroughly in order to give it a just destiny in our area of studies. The emergence of visual culture as a deserving area of enquiry is deeply rooted in real social processes that are here to stay whatever form it takes in future (Bryson 2003). The proliferation of images today in both production and circulation of visuals is so common in a way that cannot be overlooked (Bryson 2003). Although visual culture is denoted as new by some people, it is not considering that visual culture studies have been there under other disciplines. The traditional art tactic is no longer useful as technology has made it easy to come up with visuals through designing not curving out or assembling natural objects. Software of advanced sophistication is all over and that makes it possible to design visuals, which never was, at a greater speed, efficiency and quality, rightly fitted to a theme. The concept of visual culture therefore badly requires recognition as a discipline within humanities. The chapter also lists that visual culture ââ¬Å"It examines the act of seeing as a product of the tensions between external images or objects, and internal thought processesâ⬠(p.19 ) Bal left it at a point where she did not declare her stand and she is categorical that, ââ¬Å"This is why I am reluctant to declare visual culture a branch of cultural studies (p.20). The author here defends her stand by stating that visual culture definition is controversial and each side in the dissenting views has a worthy point to defend. However as a fact of todayââ¬â¢s experience designing and stylization need to be taught in class and the art of interpretation professionalized. In the chapter Bal fears that if visual culture is endorsed as a discipline, those who do so might suffer disillusionment should it cease to exist but our experience has it that the visuals are so deeply entrenched into the lives of people that it would be hard for visual study to die off instead, there is thirsty grounds for the discipline that just require to be watered and the discipline will blossom and bear fruits never to be shaken off by seasons. The object of visual culture should be soug ht first in order for us to decide whether visual culture is a discipline or cast it into its former position where it has suffered a Cinderella treatment. The chapter also analyses that if the object domain is visually categorized subject to certain assumptions, approaches and techniques and if it is organized and can be analyzed, then visual culture is undoubtedly a discipline. It es true that visual culture should concentrate some effort on discovering the forces that makes visual essentialism zero its interest in visual culture. This way the subject will qualify to be an independent discipline. In the attempt to understand the ââ¬Ëobjectââ¬â¢ Hooper-Greenhill (1989, p.104) says an object is a thing which guides feeling, action and thought. Bal (2003) goes on to argue that visuality is impure because it is itself the act of looking directed to any object that inheres the object domain. Therefore here Hooper-Greenhill agrees with Bal that there can be nothing like visuality without the object. In the same argument the object has to be made first according to Mitchell (2003), who analyses Balââ¬â¢s article. Mitchell argues that Balââ¬â¢s phobia in defining an object rather than making it is oscillatory because even the making she proposes is just a process leading to the end definition. Every act of creativity is an act of definition, a process of coming up with a definite identity out of an array of alternatives (Mitchell 2003). Mitchell supports the idea that visual culture is a combination of things brought together and thus visual culture studies must encapsulate such areas as popular culture and media which are as dynamic to capture at a particular time as fast moving jet. These areas, in addition, include non artistic, visual representation, scientific imaging, technical imaging and social acts of seeing and being active in the process, commercial media et cetera (Mitchell 2003). Generally the idea that visual culture must first of all speci fy its object of research in outlining the objective of visual culture require some consideration. The following objects among others are listed to support this point: that visual culture studies must analyze critical points and the way to visual culture and bring down their long established persistence. This is where it must deal with the aim of where visual nature meets with the process and the practices that establishes a given culture (Mirzoeff 1999). This means further that visual culture must separate itself from art history and its method of inquiry. Visual culture therefore must examine the driving force behind realism that inspires its political interest through portrait display. In this ââ¬Ëcultââ¬â¢ artistic ââ¬Ëqualityââ¬â¢ overshadows faithful representation of the achiever which should be the end (Barlow 1994, p.518). Putting the object before everything else misleads the goal where understanding should come first followed by perception that guides it. Howe ver whatever visual culture is, it is challenging to come up with its definition without referring to visual nature (Mitchell 2003). This is because visuality is made up of many things for example automatic and will reflexes and learnt ones, programmed and freely chosen (Mitchell 2003). Against the authorââ¬â¢s proposition of treating visual culture initially as a movement, the above analysis proves that visual culture is a safe ground and we can fearlessly and confidently put our hands into it and come up with successes. However with the innocence of the eye, we should not just walk upright into that decision, we need to tip toe so as to take the foot off when we foresee a soft ground. Visual culture therefore asserts itself in a basket that may be referred to as visuality. The development of images that probes for search of a specific placement, for them is proof enough that something has to be done. The response is the kind of influence visual culture has in the daily life. Th e article treats this discussion with such delicate arms to avoid being left with blame marks should the idea proposed sells, succeeds and fail later. With all this analysis, it is therefore worthy to conclude that visual culture requires special consideration and ought to be taken as a discipline. With all the images I see around that require my attention and earning life for somebody but me, it makes sense to capture whatever skill that produced them as a discipline. That way visual culture will be professionalized after centuries of suffering under other disciplines. If it hadnââ¬â¢t then time has come and it has grown too much to fit in its usual outfit. History of 1924 Olympic Games in Paris
History of 1924 Olympic Games in Paris As an honor to the retiring IOC founder and president Pierre de Coubertin (and at his request) the 1924 Olympic Games were held in Paris. The 1924 Olympics, also known as the VIII Olympiad, were held from May 4 to July 27, 1924. These Olympics saw the introduction of the first Olympic Village and the first Closing Ceremony. Official Who Opened the Games: President Gaston DoumerguePerson Who Lit the Olympic Flame (This was not a tradition until theà 1928 Olympic Games)Number of Athletes:à 3,089 (2,954 men and 135 women)Number of Countries: 44Number of Events: 126 First Closing Ceremony Seeing the three flags raised at the end of the Olympics is one of the more memorable traditions of the Olympic Games and it started in 1924. The three flags are the official flag of the Olympic Games, the flag of the hosting country, and the flag of the country chosen to host the next Games. Paavo Nurmi Paavo Nurmi, the Flying Finn, dominated nearly all the running races at the 1924 Olympics. Often, called a superman, Nurmi won five gold medals at this Olympics, including in the 1,500-meter (set an Olympic record) and the 5,000-meter (set an Olympic record), which were only about an hour apart on that very hot July 10. Nurmi also won gold in the 10,000-meter cross-country run and as a member of the winning Finnish teams on the 3,000-meter relay and the 10,000-meter relay. Nurmi, known for keeping a very even pace (which he clocked on a stopwatch) and his seriousness, went on to win nine gold medals and three silver while competing in the 1920, 1924, and 1928 Olympics. Over his lifetime, he set 25 world records.à Remaining a popular figure in Finland, Nurmi was given the honor of lighting the Olympic flame at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki and, from 1986 to 2002, appeared on the Finnish 10 markkaa banknote. Tarzan, the Swimmer Its pretty obvious that the public liked to see American swimmer Johnny Weissmuller with his shirt off. At the 1924 Olympics, Weissmuller won three gold medals: in the 100-meter freestyle, 400-meter freestyle, and the 4 x 200-meter relay. And a bronze medal as well as part of the water polo team.à Again at the 1928 Olympics, Weissmuller won two gold medals in swimming. However, what Johnny Weissmuller is most famous for is playing Tarzan in 12 different movies, made from 1932 to 1948. Chariots of Fire In 1981, the film Chariots of Fireà was released. Having one of the most recognizable theme songs in the history of film and winning four Academy Awards,à Chariots of Fireà told the story of two runners who raced during the 1924 Olympic Games. Scottish runner Eric Liddell was a focus of the film. Liddell, a devout Christian caused a stir when he refused to compete in any events held on a Sunday, which were some of his best events. That left only two events for him the 200-meter and 400-meter races, which he won bronze and gold in respectively. Interestingly, after the Olympics, he went back to North China to continue his familys missionary work, which ultimately led to his death in 1945 in a Japanese internment camp. Liddells Jewish teammate, Harold Abrahams was the other runner in theà Chariots of Fireà film. Abrahams, who had focused more on the long jump in the 1920 Olympics, decided to put his energy into training for the 100-meter dash. After hiring a professional coach, Sam Mussabini, and training hard, Abrahams won gold in the 100-meter sprint. A year later, Abrahams suffered a leg injury, ending his athletic career. Tennis The 1924 Olympics were the last to see tennis as an event until it was brought back in 1988.

Words for Bodies of Lawmakers
Words for Bodies of Lawmakers Words for Bodies of Lawmakers Words for Bodies of Lawmakers By Mark Nichol This post discusses an assortment of words employed in English to refer to a group of people responsible for representing the general populace and passing laws, or to pertain to the room in which they meet to do so, or both. Assembly, from Anglo-French by way of the Latin term assimulare (ââ¬Å"togetherâ⬠), is used in many states and nations to refer to a body of legislators, usually one of two in a bicameral, or two-house, system. It also refers in general to a gathering. Burgess was used in Englandââ¬â¢s Parliament and subsequently in some of the British colonies in North America to refer to legislators. It is related to burg and borough, which often form part of the name of a city or a district of one; the term basically means ââ¬Å"citizen.â⬠(When the term was widely used, any citizen of at least modestly prosperous standing conceivably could serve as a burgess.) The Latin origin, burgensis, mutated into the Old French word borjois, which then entered English as burgeis and was later spelled in its present form. Later, bourgeois, the Modern French form of borjois, was borrowed directly into English; it now collectively denotes people with conventional middle-class values. Chamber is from the Latin word for an arched roof, which is borrowed from a Greek term meaning ââ¬Å"vault.â⬠It can also apply to a meeting room for legislators or to a judgeââ¬â¢s office or to a reception room for a person in a position of authority, or any room in general. (The root word of bicameral has the same origin, as does camera.) The word also applies to an artificial or natural enclosed space or cavity, such as a portion of a cavern, a section of a machine, or a segment of a heart. In addition, it describes a compartment for a bullet in a gun. The word can serve as an adjective, as in ââ¬Å"chamber music,â⬠or a verb describing the action of occupying a space. Congress, from the Latin term congredi, which literally means ââ¬Å"walk together,â⬠came to refer to a formal meeting of representatives from different places. Its current sense stems from the name of the Continental Congress, attended by delegates from each of the thirteen original (and distinct) British colonies in North America. When the fledgling US government subsequently named its bicameral legislative body, consisting of the Senate and the House of Representatives, Congress, the meaning shifted to refer to a body of representatives from the same country or state. (Congress is also employed, though rarely, in the sense of ââ¬Å"a sexual union.â⬠) Council, which derives from the Latin term concilium, which roughly means ââ¬Å"call with,â⬠refers to a group that makes decisions, rules, or laws or provide guidance. Formal lawmaking councils usually are limited in scope to jurisdictions such as cities or towns. Diet, ultimately from the Greek term diaita, meaning ââ¬Å"regimenâ⬠or ââ¬Å"way of life,â⬠came to refer to daily rites or obligations and then daily meetings of counselors and officials, and it still is employed as part of the formal name for the national legislature in Japan. (The use of the word in reference to eating and nutrition has the same etymological source.) Legislature is an extension of legislator, itself directly stemming from the Latin phrase legis lator, meaning ââ¬Å"one who proposes a law.â⬠(Legis is the progenitor of legal.) The word is widely used generically to refer to a body of lawmakers and is frequently part of such a groupââ¬â¢s formal name. The spelling of the Old French term parlement, meaning ââ¬Å"a talk,â⬠was altered, influenced by the Latin word parliamentum, to parliament to refer to a conference. A later sense of an assembly commanded by a monarch contributed to the naming of Englandââ¬â¢s Parliament, its national deliberative body. Parliamentarian originally referred to member of Parliamentââ¬â¢s faction in the English Civil War, but in modern use it pertains to someone knowledgeable about parliamentary procedure, a protocol for conducting formal meetings. One term that didnââ¬â¢t survive into the modern era is witenagemot, a compound word referring to advisory groups consisting of members of the ruling class in various Anglo-Saxon kingdoms in the early Middle Ages. The first element is a plural form of wita, meaning ââ¬Å"wise man,â⬠and the second part of the word, gemot, means ââ¬Å"meeting.â⬠That word is related to moot, extinct as a noun and used rarely as a verb but present as an adjective in the idiomatic phrase ââ¬Å"moot point.â⬠Moot and the second syllable of gemot are related to meet, meeting, and met. White Collar Crime as a Non-Violent Type of Crime Assignment
White Collar Crime as a Non-Violent Type of Crime - Assignment Example Owing to its organizational nature, white collar crime requires an organizational approach towards mitigation. The text in this study will define through a proposal addressed to a financial institution how a Chief Risk Officer can strategize and implement measures to curb white collar crime within a financial institution. The text will highlight a risk strategy, overall organizational chart, software and technology, and finally the procedures and policies that will see to it that the institutionââ¬â¢s finances are safe and transparent. Every organization requires measures that address threats or potential risks which may act as loopholes leading to white collar crime within or beyond the organization. The offered consultative measures feature governance that is sustainable, programs that manage risks, and compliance with the set measures that work to manage, monitor, identify, and remediate the entire organizing process in preventing the vicious. Access means that all organizational documentation and data has controlled exposure to affect both its security and privacy. This is because access to such crucial aspects of an organization means that modification and/or misuse of the same can enable the one possessing them to exercise whatever they wish. The set access controls should be designed to ensure that the right person accesses the information or documentation they need, only when they need it. This is important because unauthorized personnel cannot misuse such, and in case of any crime, then it is possible to narrow down to the few who have the access (Pontell & Geis, 2010). Again, security should go beyond the organization level, especially in cases where there is internet use. Most firms store or conduct their activities online, where it is known that virtual transactions and storages are prone to cracking and hacking. As such, there should be measures that comply with up-to-standard IT security to curb these risks.à Ã

Civil Engineering Management Portfolio Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4000 words
Civil Engineering Management Portfolio - Essay Example Management is a leading science domain and routine in managing building companies. It is one of the oldest human activities; it activates human abilities on building investment objects in order to assure necessity for civil engineering purposes. It is good enough reason to take place in management development in civil engineering. As there are too many definitions of management depending on an author, only the most important are offered, namely the most acceptable in civil engineering domain. Remarkable attention is given to managing tasks in civil engineering as well to their correlationsIf we speak about management in civil engineering then the total quality management must be proposed. Total quality management is a business philosophy and accessible way of modern companies around the whole world. It is the most contemporary idea of developing and advancing in all life and work domains. The growing urge of efficient use of the earth's resources such as land, air, water and raw mate rials as well as concentration on efficient design, analysis and maintenance of civil structures requires a better insight in the spatial and temporal patterns of resources and activities (Bean, A.L., 2007). In view of the fact that the parameters of civil engineering today are not only confined to design and construction of structures but due to globalization and privatization of civil engineering organizations now civil engineering emerges as a study, which not only pay attention on construction.... Inspection is the activity that assesses by measurement or testing whether an element has conformed to specifications. Corrective work is then ordered to rectify any non-conformance in the element. QC builds upon the inspection efforts and relies largely on statistical techniques to determine trends and detect problems in the processes. Such techniques are being used routinely in manufacturing. With respect to the construction industry, concrete cube testing is one rare example. Both QA and TQM are focused on meeting customer requirements, and this is at the top of the agenda. It may be said that if TQM is necessary for all businesses, it becomes more crucial and critical in case of civil engineering because structures and constructions are the phenomena afford no repetition or revision after completion. In this way, civil engineering project management becomes a dynamic multi-dimensional and multi-pronged strategic field. (Pyzdek, Thomas, (2000) 1.1 Objective of the Study In general and widely adopted sense, civil engineers are considered to design and manage the construction of roads, railways, buildings, bridges, tunnels, dams, airports, water supply and sewage systems. They must have to look into several factors in the design procedure from the production costs and expected lifetime of a project keeping in view the government policies and possible environmental hazards such as hurricanes and earthquakes. Civil engineering, considered one of the oldest engineering disciplines, assimilates many specialties. The most common and crucial fields of civil engineering include structural, water resources, construction, transportation, and geotechnical engineering. (Bean, A.L., 2007) Most of the civil engineers hold administrative or supervisory

The Chinese Culture Essay Example for Free
The Chinese Culture Essay Chinese people have had the worldââ¬â¢s most successful continuous culture for the past four millennia, and culture and traditions remain prominent wherever they live. Even in the twenty-first century, Chinese people living in China, Taiwan and the United States of America still value their culture and traditions. And people from Chinese culture living in Australia and the United Kingdom follow Chinese culture and traditions in relation to their health beliefs. Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism are the main three philosophies or religions in Chinese culture. Taoism is considered both a religion and philosophy emphasizing the independence of the individual and connection to natural forces of life, Confucianism provides the moral code or ethics of behavior, and Buddhism contains the rituals of the spiritual life. Like all cultures, Chinese culture has a particular perspective on dying and death. Chinese society and its people have developed meanings about death throughout history, particularly in relation to religious beliefs, philosophical beliefs, and cultural practices. Death is a taboo and Chinese families will not discuss issues of death and dying for fear of invoking bad luck. In order to postpone bad luck associated with death, Chinese people will try to prolong the patientââ¬â¢s life as long as possible, while also acknowledging that death is part of the lifespan. When a person is dying Chinese people believe that dying in the main hall of the house enables an individual symbolically to join her/his ancestors represented by these tablets or the family altar. Since cremation is traditionally uncommon, the burial of the dead is a matter taken very seriously in Chinese society. Improper funeral arrangements can cause ill fortune and disaster on the family of the deceased. To a certain degree, Chinese funeral rites and burial customs are determined by the age of the deceased, cause of death, status and position in society, and marital status. According to Chinese custom, an elder should never show respect to someone younger. So, if the deceased is a young bachelor, for example, his body cannot be brought home and must remain at the funeral parlor. His parents cannot offer prayers to their son, either: Since he was unmarried, he did not have any children to whom he could perform these same rites. (This is why the body cannot come into the family home. ) If an infant or child dies, no funeral rites are performed either since respect cannot be shown to a younger person. The child is thus buried in silence. Preparation for a funeral often begins before a death has occurred. When a person is on his/her deathbed, a coffin will often have already been ordered by the family. When a death occurs in a family all statues of deities in the house are covered up with red paper (not to be exposed to the body or coffin) and all mirrors are removed (it is believed that one who sees the reflection of a coffin in a mirror will shortly have a death in his/her family). A white cloth is hung over the doorway to the house and a gong is placed to the left of the entrance if the deceased is a male, and to the right if female. Before being placed in the coffin, the corpse is cleaned with a damp towel dusted with talcum powder, and dressed in his/her best clothes (all other clothing of the deceased is burned) before being placed on a mat (or hay in rural areas). The body is completely dressed, including the footwear. Chinese religion was originally oriented to worshipping the supreme god Shang Di during the Xia and Shang dynasties, with the king and diviners acting as priests and using oracle bones. The Zhou dynasty oriented it to worshipping the broader concept of heaven. A large part of Chinese culture is based on the notion that a spiritual world exists. Countless methods of divination have helped answer questions, even serving as an alternate to medicine. In general, the Chinese are a collective society with a need for group affiliation, whether to their family, school, work group, or country. In order to maintain a sense of harmony, they will act with decorum at all times and will not do anything to cause someone else public embarrassment. They are willing to subjugate their own feelings for the good of the group. Since the Chinese strive for harmony and are group dependent, they rely on facial expression, tone of voice and posture to tell them what someone feels. Frowning while someone is speaking is interpreted as a sign of disagreement. Therefore, most Chinese maintain an impassive expression when speaking. It is considered disrespectful to stare into another persons eyes. In crowded situations the Chinese avoid eye contact to give themselves privacy. The Chinese culture is one of the oldest cultures today. It is rich in diverse beliefs and religions. The culture has very deep and profound history. Many of the the old customs are even still practiced today. It was very interesting learning about this culture, and comparing it to my culture. Essay on the Power Hopkins Sonnet, Gods Grandeur -- Sonnet essays
Essay on the Power Hopkins' Sonnet, God's Grandeur As "the world is charged with the grandeur of God," so Gerard Manley Hopkins' sonnet, "God's Grandeur," is charged with language, imagery, sounds and metric patterns that express that grandeur. Through its powerful use of the elements of poetry, the poem explores the power of God and the wonder of nature. "God's Grandeur" is a lyric poem. The tone of the poem is one, naturally, of grandeur, as well as power and wonder. Hopkins' choices of words add to the feeling of grandeur that is the subject of the poem through their powerful imagery, and they express wonder at the power and grandeur of God and the continuity of nature. Words such as "grandeur" and "flame out" show the power with which God is revealed in His creation, while "seared," "bleared," "smeared," "smudge," and "smell" add to the sense of man's inability to recognize God's grandeur and our tendency to destroy it. In the last line of the poem, "warm breast" and "bright wings" give a sense of hope for the world, in the warmth and light of the Holy Ghost, daily renewing the world with the morning. Several key metaphors are used in the poem. The first is the me... ...em. The theme of the poems involves, according to title, God's grandeur, and his power as it is revealed in creation. It also involves the "searing" effect of generations of civilization that have trod the earth. Finally, it involves the "dearest freshness deep down things" of nature and the regenerative power of God to repair the damage of civilization. Through his use of the elements of poetry and powerful imagery, Hopkins expresses his theme in a remarkable way. "God's Grandeur" is a powerful, expressive poem, a wonderful example of the uses of metaphor, imagery, and alliteration.

China: Overpopulation
The Country of China accumulates over 1/5 the population of the world with a massive total of over 1. 3 billion people. Having an Immense population not only creates problems within the country, but also triggers some of the largest Issues our world has faced today. Although China has released a One-Child policy to slightly limit the population rate, problems are continuing to grow at a constant rate. The most powerful institution in the nation of China is the Communist Party of China, otherwise known as the CPA.They set goals and policy that the government hen sets in motion (Dreamer). The Chinese government is generally thought to be repressive, while freedoms of speech, assembly, religion, and press are not well respected (ââ¬Å"Chinaâ⬠). In 1979, the Chinese Communist leader Issued the One-Child Policy to limit the nation's population (Hardwood). There are also exceptions to China's One-Child Policy. For instance, the policy applies only to the Han, who make up about 92% of China's population. The Han are descendants of China's first great dynasty. However, rural couples are allowed to have a second child if the first one was a female (Dreamer). Many believe that this form of policy Is unfair and can disturb the cultures of Chinese families. Years ago, China was once concerned for having had too many people to support. As of today, the One-Child Policy causes the country to have too few children to support a rapidly aging country (Hardwood). Also, because males are more valuable than females traditionally, the female population declines. If the ratio of men increases over women, then the population will also decline too fast (Hardwood).Based on the July 2013 census, the population of China stands at about 1,349,585,838 and continues to grow (ââ¬Å"One-Child Policy'). With several people living In urban areas. It is quite difficult for China's government to force its population controlling policies (Hardwood). Those who don't follow the policy are pena lized with heavy fines, destruction of home or possessions, political/physical harassment, and even loss of employment (ââ¬Å"One-Child Policyâ⬠). Even with the policy, China's population still continues to grow at a rapid pace. Some estimates show that nearly 1 million more births occur than deaths every 5 weeks (ââ¬Å"One-Child Policy'). These problems will only continue to expedite adversely If a resolution does not develop soon. There are several causes for the rapidly increasing population, but only a few present itself as the primary source. One of the main factors is the fact that China has a high birth rate and a low death rate. This is due to a lack of family planning, a high level of Infant mortality and increased sanitation. Some cultures also believe that It Is unacceptable to use contraception's (ââ¬Å"Chinaâ⬠). Other than the logical causes, there was also said to be an ââ¬Å"Economic Projectâ⬠which had Increased the population to spark China's econom y. According to sources, ââ¬Å"in 1 978, China embarked on an economic project that liberated foreign trade and investment; encouraging the formation of rural and private businesses as an attempt to raise China's economy (Hardwood). This project ultimately led to people having more children as it was conducive to the economy. The problem of overpopulation and the One-Child Policy affect China In several unemployment are serious problems which continue to rise in China (ââ¬Å"Chinaâ⬠). The Chinese government neglected to protect its water, air, and land against pollution. Because of this, China is the world's second largest producer of the dangerous greenhouse gases (Dreamer). For the impacts from the policy, ââ¬Å"Officials of China suggested that the immediate consequences of the policy shift would be relatively minor, although the government's own demographic estimates showed that upwards of 10 million couples will be affectedâ⬠(ââ¬Å"One-Child Policy').The average h ousehold size in China was also down to 3. 1 people, from 3. 44 in 2000. From an international standpoint, the One-Child Policy impacts the entire world by helping reduce the population. Although people around the world complained that the rule was extreme and unfair, the policy has, in some ways, been effective (Dreamer). With China having a mass number of people living in such packed places, several people tend to immigrate to other countries, which can likely cause other problems within those countries as well (Dreamer).Because China is the most populous country, China attracts several other multi-national companies to set up their businesses in areas holding the largest people. Examples of these companies include Coca Cola, Motorola and Volkswagen (Hardwood). Because several companies set up their businesses in a variety of locations, China is ranked number one for having the fasted growing economy (ââ¬Å"Dreamerâ⬠). Solutions to improving the policy are slowly going into effect. After the policy, a system of benefits and penalties went into effect. Couples who signed the policy pledge were sometimes granted rewards including regular payments, easy access to healthcare, education, and even desired Job categories for both the parents and the child (ââ¬Å"One-Child Policy'). In the past year, China's governing Communist Party released a document presenting policy changes in allowing couples to have an additional child if the mother or father was an only child (ââ¬Å"One-Child Policy').Because f the fact that the policy changes suit most people throughout the nation, the country of China may be able to become stable in the future without disturbing too much of the culture (Hardwood). Although China has released a One-Child policy to slightly reduce the population, the changes they have made will allow the country to become stronger and more stabilized. Although the country of China still contains problems due to an immense population. The Communist Par ty of China is still in search for a greater solution to make their nation a better place for both China and the World.

Costa Coffee Essay
The remote environment comprises factors that originate beyond and usually irrespective and out of Costa Coffeeââ¬â¢s control. Economic factors Since Costa Coffee is a multinational business, top-level managers must consider the economic situations on both the National (Egypt) and International levels. Currencies exchange rate (Forex) affects Costa Coffeeââ¬â¢s final productsââ¬â¢ prices as well as operation costs. Costa Coffee imports high quality coffee beans from rainforest farms where it pays for in local currency, and sells as coffee in another country with its local country. Hence, when the Egyptian Pound depreciates, the cost of beans relatively increases; therefore, causing a fall in profit margin and vice versa. If depreciation is too much, then Costa might increase its selling prices. Moreover, interest rate is vital for a business considering expansion as Costa Coffee. As interest rates increase, Costa Coffeeââ¬â¢s ability and willingness to expand or open new branches decreases; due to the high cost of capital. Furthermore, the stock market plays a significant role in encouraging investors to invest in Costa Coffee due to the increasing profits and the good reputation. Finally, high economic growth rate of a country leads people to increase their consumption of Costa Coffeeââ¬â¢s products; since they have more income. Social Factors Egyptiansââ¬â¢ culture and lifestyle has dramatically changed in the last 10 years. People are more willing to go to cafes for lunch, dinner or simply a snack. Considering the Egyptian demographics of lifestyle and age groups, most of the Egyptian population falls in the youth age group. Hence, Costa Coffee plays music and offers an atmosphere that is convenient for all ages with special attention to youth. Costa Coffee respects the religion of each nation in which it operates. To clarify, Costa Coffee neither sells alcoholic drinks nor pork-containing food. In addition, Costa Coffeeââ¬â¢s menu is written in both English and Arabic languages. English is the most widely spoken language, and Egypt is known as a touristic attraction. Plus, Egyptians like to come across a menu written in their own language for simplicity and showing cultural respect. Also, many people nowadays are concerned with their health; Costa Coffee is providing low-calorie food, a variety of fresh salads, sandwiches, and fresh fruit juice. Political Factors Governmental rules and regulations could affect the firmââ¬â¢s suppliers and the price of the raw materials. Imposed taxes or tariffs on the imported coffee beans add to raw materials cost. Rules regarding social insurance add to labor costs. Political instability and strikes do affect labor and consumers of Costa Coffee. Technological Factors Advanced machines affect the firmââ¬â¢s performance and efficiency through producing tasty coffee as quick as possible. High quality and speed of service affects customer satisfaction and loyalty. Costa Coffee uses highly advanced brewers and coffee makers for the best coffee cup. Besides, the use of the Internet to facilitate transactions between Costa and its suppliers lowers transaction costs and decreases lead time. As a result, stakeholders are more satisfied with increased profits and lower costs. Ecological Factors Costa Coffee uses recyclable paper bags and paper cups. And, it tries to reduce its energy consumption as steps towards a greener environment. It also ensures adherence to responsible farming practices, so that natural habitats are protected thereby reducing deforestation and carbon emissions. Furthermore, Costa is working to deliver green (LEED) certification for new stores beginning later this year and is working closely with its suppliers to develop more environmentally friendly packaging. Industry Environment Operating Environment A firmââ¬â¢s operating environment is related to environmental factors that directly affect the firm and its success in obtaining necessary resources. Yet, they are still factors beyond its area of control. 1. Competitors Costa coffee in Egypt faces high direct competition where around almost every corner in the cities, a coffee shop exists. Therefore, product differentiation is a must, and persistent high-quality is the way to keeping customers. Whichever Costa Coffee shop you enter, you are greeted the same, indulge in the same taste and pay what you see in the menu. Menu prices are tax inclusive which is different than most of other coffee shops. Competitors include, but are not limited to, Starbucks Coffee, Cilantro and Beanoââ¬â¢s cafe. Creditors Costaââ¬â¢s past payment records and working capital position are the main attributes affecting creditors decisions. Considering the Egyptian markets, banks are not rare to find. Costa might be dealing with several banks, and may be granted loans from several areas. Hence, creditors have little leverage; since interest rates are controlled by central bank of Egypt as well. Customers Costa coffee is a service firm. Therefore, its utmost goal is customer satisfaction and loyalty to yield profits. Constantly monitoring Egyptââ¬â¢s demographics is essential in keeping a convenient atmosphere. For instance, Costa must always recognise what the youth are listening to these days to be able to play the optimum collection of songs in its branches while abiding by the brandââ¬â¢s image. Accessibility of location and parking spaces are of the main issues regarded by people when deciding on their hang-outs. And, the customer buyer behaviour of whether they prefer more salads and sandwiches rather than desserts; affects how much of each should be available at Costaââ¬â¢s branches. Labor Costaââ¬â¢s reputation and image is kept through its workers. Costa has to respect labor rights especially now that people are more aware of the rights than ever before. Also, Costa has to be selective in its waiters and baristas to keep the brandââ¬â¢s image and reputation. As a result of Costaââ¬â¢s reputation, highly-qualified workers apply for jobs at Costa Coffee. Suppliers Supplier relationships are as important as customer relationships. A good supplier relationships decreases yield time and enhances firmââ¬â¢s productivity. In Costaââ¬â¢s case, supplier power is not high as Costa has multiple suppliers, with low switching costs. However, supplier relationships are well-attended to at Costa Coffee; as part of its social responsibility towards coffee-growing countries.

Interpersonal and organisational effectiveness and identify areas for Assignment
Interpersonal and organisational effectiveness and identify areas for professional development - Assignment Example I will use the communication process model to aid in understanding why this critical incident occurred and how such situations can be avoided in the future. There are three types-linear, interactive and transactional models (Johnson, 2014). The basic elements in a communication model involved are: Sender- this is the one who initiates and passes a message. Receiver-this is the person that the message is directed to. Decode-when the receiver translates the message into something one can understand through oneââ¬â¢s personal experience or the language one understands. Encoding-this is conversion of the words to symbols is what is known as encoding. (West & Turner, 2011). Channel-this is the medium used to convey the message. Feedback-it is the process the receiver shows whether or not the message has been understood the way the sender intended it. Message-this is the subject of communication. Noise, another major element (Narula, 2006) is considered a way of distorting the message by distracting the receiver. The different processes are: the linear; which involves a sender, message and receiver. The message flows directly from the sender to receiver and this usually does not require feedback. Transactional model has the sender and receiver playing the same roles at the same time (Chaturvedi & Chaturvedi, 2011). It seems ineffective and chaotic especially because noise is usually an element here. Interactive model is an upgrade of linear which allows feedback element because the receiver can send back the message after encoding. From the explanation above, I used the transactional model which was ineffective since I talked most of the time and noise distorted the message due to the shouting as I reprimanded the members. The best model to be used here would have been the interactive model because this would have allowed both parties to exchange words, allowing for a conversation to take place
